Istedgade 100 (English)
Day shelter for homeless and socially isolated people on Vesterbro.
Istedgade 100 is a shelter for homeless and socially isolated people on Vesterbro, among which many are homeless migrants.
Here our guests can have their most basic needs met and enjoy time with other people - also on several of their native languages. We strive to create a homely and safe atmosphere and a space where everybody feels welcome as they are.
- Target group
-
Our target group is adults who are homeless and/or socially isolated. Many are Eastern European streetsleeping migrants, others are Danes from the local area.
Apart from Istedgade 100 homeless migrants of Vesterbro have very few places to seek shelter. In the weekend the only other option is the night service and subsequent shelter in Mariakirken.
- Services
-
Istedgade 100 offers our guest rest from the stressful life on the streets of Copenhagen.
So-called relational work - spending time with and building relations to our guests - is central to our service. We have volunteers who speak our the native languages of our guests, facilitating greatly benificial conversations about everything from grief to more casual everyday stuff.
This all contributes to what we call homely "hygge". Our guests often refer to Istedgade 100 as their home in Copenhagen.
We offer: coffee and tea, bread and sandwiches, a shower, a toilet, laundry facilities, charging of phones, clothes, hygiene- and personal care products, foot treatments and more.
We can also help facilitate you becoming a salesman of homeless magazines.
Dogs are welcome.
For women
Tuesdays from 11:30-13:30 the place is open just for women. Typically there will be a nurse teaching about different health challenges. Simple examinations such as blood pressure can be performed. For further medical help the nurse can refer Danes to their GP and foreigners to Caritas or the Red Cross Clinic.
For menEvery other Friday from 12-13:30 the place is open just for men. There'll be different themes and activities, e.g. sowing and planting, board games, holiday get togethers and help with doing minor clothes repairs on a sowing machine. There'll be different guests talking on different topics, e.g. a nurse.
- Outreach
-
Our collaborators in Outreach visit us once a week. They facilitate contact between our guests and authorities, help retrieve documents and help register guests as homeless magazine sellers.
- Employees and volunteers
-
We have to employees and approximately 65 volunteers. On a typical day there'll be one-two employees and three-five volunteers.
Volunteers participate all our work - relational as well as practical.
